Price:
There are many sets of cups that are a lot
cheaper and there are many that are a lot more expensive, however at $324.99 the Foxy 3 Combo cups represent
excellent value for money.
Like their little brothers / sisters
(depending on how you like to view them), the Foxy 2.5's, these cups are not only beautiful to look at they
are everything you would look for as a working professional.
You wont find a set of combo cups designed and
made from the ground up that function as well as these for less but more about that later
on...
What's Included?:
- 2
x Foxy 3 regular
cups
- 1
x Foxy 3 chopped
cup
- 1
x Deluxe velvet
bag
Delivery Time /
Packaging:
Donnie ships quickly and professionally, just
like it should be done. It's reassuring to get a receipt for your payment instantly in your email in
box and then another to tell you that your items has shipped and exactly
when.
These took 12 days from payment to arrive
from the USA to the UK however they were delayed in customs. This is unavoidable and it happens from
time to time, it's just a part of life.
Donnie
always packs as well as is humanly possible. The cups and balls arrived in a strong box, securely
taped.
Inside of the box were polystyrene beads
surrounding the cups and balls.
The
cups were stacked and wrapped in a thick layer of securely taped bubble wrap. The first thing that hit
me as I picked up the wrapped cups from the box was the weight... 1 1/2 pounds of beautiful polished copper
was about to be unveiled!
Under
the bubble wrap the cups were individually wrapped in tissue paper and
stacked. Everything arrived in 100% perfect
condition.
Construction /
Durability:
Firstly I
have to say that I love the Foxy 2.5's, the set I have was bought from Jake. Donnie Buckley (president
of Magpie Magic) acquired RNT2 in March 2009 and is still spinning the 2.5's from the original
tooling.
The Foxy
2.5's spun by Jake are (at least in my opinion) incredible cups. Not only are they a beautiful set of
cups but the tolerances are very finely balanced. I honestly thought that they were right on the
edge of what was possible (at least without compromise to
functionality.)
They hold a
regulation tennis ball as a final load and 3 working balls on the saddle yet they look deceptively
small.
Many people
have posted to forums on the internet (there's a discussion on themagiccafe regarding it) fantasising about a
combo set of Foxy
2.5s...
I say
fantasising because nobody actually thought it could be done without loosing
something.
In fact, it
couldn't; however Donnie has worked his magic and made it happen by redesigning the cup to create the Foxy
3. Entirely new tooling was created for these cups and the Foxy 3 does everything the 2.5 ever did but
it also includes an invisibly gaffed chop
cup!
If you are a car lover you will
appreciate a well designed cabriolet and hate badly designed ones. By a badly designed cabriolet I mean
a regular saloon that has had its roof chopped off as an afterthought to try to increase
sales.
The same comparison can be drawn to combo
sets. There are some that were designed that way in the first place and there are others that simply
have a gaff glued in place. The gaff in the Foxy 3 is beautifully spun in and each and every
cup even weighs exactly the
same.
Another point worth mentioning here is Donnie's immaculate attention to
detail. As the president of Magpie Magic it is not surprising that Donnie likes shiny things...
That appreciation of well made items (thankfully) spills over into Donnie's cup production. If you
look at how well the * insides * of the cups are finished you will appreciate
this.

The treatment on the inside of the cups is non reflective (to
avoid flashes) but just as beautiful as the mirror polished exteriors. You gotta love it!
The Foxy 3's are spun from .064 gauge
copper making them weightier than the 2.5's, each cup weighing it at 8oz (half a pound!)
each.
Trust me when I say they feel beautiful in your
hand and very well balanced, they stack perfectly with no wobble but have enough clearance to allow for a
smooth separation.
This may sound strange but I have
some sets of cups that "suck against" the cup below it when you lift the top one. Not only does this feel
awkward but it also hinders you in performance.
These are beautifully engineered
cups in every way.
A good few years ago I lusted
after the Foxy 2.5's mega thick' s, I hear that none were ever spun and while I don't know if that is true or not,
with the Foxy 3's I have the addition of a combo set as well as the extra weight.
Suitability:
As I have mentioned above, the Foxy 3's
do everything that the 2.5's ever did with the additional bonuses of a chopped feature and that
ergonomic weight.
They will take 3 x 1" balls on the
saddle without hanging or floating. RNT2 balls are sold as the finished size. A 1" ball is 1"
inclusive of its outer
jacket.
This makes total sense instead of selling
1" balls that are actually 1 1/8" in size. These will not take 3 x 1 1/8 balls on the saddle and still
stack.
They are shaped to really
accentuate the final load size making it look impossibly big, Donnie stated on a forum that this deception had
been compromised slightly to allow for the gaff with the new tooling however I think it still looks as
deceptive. See for yourself...
The chopped cup worked
perfectly with the balls supplied, I'm not sure if Donnie adjusted the ball before shipping but even so, the
RNT2 balls take seconds to adjust once you are used to them. They even come with an instruction sheet
detailing how to do this.
For those who like to steal a
ball from the saddle with the chopped cup for a penetration, this feature works great with these cups and 1"
balls.
Overall:
In summing up I really am taken with
these cups, they do everything I could possibly want from cups with the added weight and chopped
feature. I've given them 10 out of 10 all round because I cannot find fault with them. I will use
these for both combo and regular routines and I can see them quickly becoming
workers.
For collectors these are a must have set and
they certainly show that Donnie has put his stamp on RNT2 and the world of cups. For workers they are a
solid, reliable, functional and beautiful set of cups that you will use and enjoy
using.
I believe it was Dai Vernon who said
"Magician's stop thinking too soon", though I have heard it accredited to Paul Fox, Al Baker and others;
either way I'm glad that Donnie didn't stop thinking because now we can all reap the rewards of his sleepless
nights!
Donnie and RNT2 have really pushed the
envelope here with these cups and created something many didn't think possible, I'd snap up a set now while
you can!
